Talk with your doctor about getting the pneumococcal vaccine. There are two kinds of pneumonia vaccines. You may need to get both. Pneumococcal pneumonia is caused by bacteria that spread from person to person. It can cause minor problems, such as ear infections. But it can also turn into these life-threatening illnesses:
- Infection of the lungs (pneumonia)
- Infection of the covering of the brain and spinal cord (meningitis)
- Infection of the blood (bacteremia)
People at the highest risk of pneumococcal disease include:
- Children under age 2
- Adults over age 50
- People with certain health conditions
- People who smoke, vape, or use other tobacco or nicotine products
This vaccine can help prevent pneumococcal disease in both adults and children. Some people should not have the vaccine. Make sure to ask your doctor if you should have the vaccine.
